The book 'Catherine Called Birdy' is a historical fiction novel about a teenage girl's frustrating journey written by Karen Cushman. In the book the three main themes are freedom from the church, powerlessness from the family and inequality from men. In the book freedom from the church shows when the church is in power and when most of the days are all feasts for saints. Powerlessness from the family is when Catherine is being taught how to be a girl and when she always has to stay home and when Catherine is forced to be married to Shaggy Beard. The inequality from men was horrible in the middle ages. The inequality from men show that Catherine has no freedom because she is a girl. All in all being a noble girl in the middle ages would have been very frustrating and complicated.
